Location and Local Attractions LOCAL TOWNS Tiverton is a market town with a Charter dating from 1258. It stands above its two rivers, the Exe and the Lowman. It was originally known as Twyfordton, a two ford town. In the Middle Ages it was an important market place and became a centre for the woollen industry, with many wealthy merchants endowing it. It has very interesting architecture. There are three medieval almshouses. St. Peter`s Church next to the Castle is wonderful and well worth a visit, and so is St. George`s Church, the finest Georgian church in Devon. Knightshayes Court is a couple of miles away - wonderful garden. Bampton is an attractive small town with a lovely church and incomplete motte and bailey castle. Crediton has an ancient tradition: it was the birthplace of St. Boniface and the seat of a bishop between 909 and 1050, and the most important building is Holy Cross Church. Wonderful delicatessen called Treloar`s. Cullompton has one of Devon`s best churches, St. Andrew`s, and other very interesting old buildings in the High Street. There are many charming local villages with interesting churches and pubs serving excellent food.
