GROUP VISITS
We welcome
pre-booked group visits of more than 12 people outside
normal opening hours at any time of year. Maximum
number for a party is 60, split into two groups. Each
tour is tailored to the interest of the group. Allow
plenty of time for your visit to savour the history
and atmosphere of this remarkable building.
Tours of the medieval Castle
Tours take about an hour and a half. In this time
the Castle`s fascinating history of 900 years is related,
and architectural details pointed out. Inside the
Castle can be seen a fine collection of English Civil
War arms and armour, some pieces of which can be tried
on which is fun for visitors of all ages, interesting
furniture and pictures. See the medieval garderobes,
hear about secret passages and ghost stories. If there
is time wander round the beautiful walled gardens
on your own.
Extended tours
For certain special interest groups the option is
offered of a tour of the medieval Castle and the owners`
private house within the courtyard, South Court (built
1690 onwards), takes about two hours, and visitors
can see the owners` collection of furniture and family
portraits as well as recent refurbishment carried
out; so all ages of architecture from medieval to
modern can be seen. Again if there is time wander
round the wonderful, colourful gardens on your own;
so allow a little longer if it is a nice day.
School Parties
The Castle is great fun for children - very hands
on. We particularly welcome school parties, specially
if they come in period costume. Everyone wants to
come as a princess, a knight or a dragon, but we also
welcome maids, garden boys, chimney sweeps, scullions,
cats, ghosts, butlers, lavatory cleaners (they need
little rakes to clean the smelly garderobes), cooks,
spiders, etc. Full fancy dress is not necessary -
just a hat, sword or broom will do to make believe
in life as it was once upon a time. Tours take one
hour. We ask that one adult is in charge of every
ten children at all times, and these adults are admitted
free of charge. Others are very welcome to attend,
but a fee is payable.
Fees and Payment Arrangements
Please note that we have kept our fees extremely moderate
for all visitors.
